European Industry Electrification: Emerging Priorities & Challenges

Join us for a webinar on the electrification of industrial processes and its role in Europe’s industrial decarbonisation. Organised as a joint effort between the SET Plan Implementation Working Group Sustainable and Efficient Enery Use in Industry (IWG-Industry) and EERA's Joint Programme on Energy Efficiency in Industrial Processes (EERA JP EEIP), this webinar will present and discuss key findings, recommendations and challenges from two upcoming draft reports:

  • “Emerging Regulatory, Energy System and R&I Priorities related to the electrification of industrial processes” prepared by the Electrification Task Force, part of SET Plan IWG-Industry,
  • “Electrification and Hydrogen for a Decarbonized European Industry, Policy-relevant findings from EU research community” a White Paper from the EERA JP EEIP.

The presentations will be followed by an expert panel discussion and a Q&A session.

The webinar will begin with a keynote speech, followed by an overview of the draft Report on Electrification of Industrial Processes' Emerging Priorities outlining the main priorities and needs in terms of research and innovation (R&I), regulation and the energy system which have been identified through a consultation process with stakeholders from the SET Plan IWGs on Industry and Energy Systems. The report has been developed by the Task Force on Industrial Electrification, which was established by the IWG-Industry in the framework of its cooperation with the IWG on Energy Systems, and with the involvement of the IWG on Direct Current (DC) Technologies and ETIP SNET. The report will be finalised and issued after the webinar so as to incorporate the feedback and conclusions emerging from the discussion.

Afterwards, the forthcoming white paper from the EERA JP EEIP on Electrification and Hydrogen for a Decarbonized European Industry will be presented, highlighting policy-relevant findings from the EU research community, as well as areas of convergence and potential alignment between research priorities and industrial deployment needs.

The expert panel session that will follow will discuss the recommendations from both reports in relation to the electrification of industrial processes, and their interplay and implications for the wider energy system transformation, both in terms of research and innovation priorities and regulatory and energy system requirements.
