The aim of the project is to mobilize the academic community in Bulgaria and strengthen its ability to present applied knowledge on the possibilities of effectively translating climate/carbon neutrality goals into concrete actions within the framework of a sustainable and just transition in Bulgaria and the region. Through the creation of a new scientific research unit called Net-Zero Lab@FEBA, under the umbrella of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", the efforts of the employees, collaborators and partners of the Faculty are directed towards three main research directions:

• Conducting complex techno-economic studies: The laboratory will specialize in carrying out focused sectoral techno-economic studies on the applicability of various technological solutions for transformation in energy and industrial processes on the way to achieving net zero emissions. This guide includes power system simulations and modelling.

• Development of tools to support decision-making: Lab initiatives create tools, such as regional technology roadmaps, indices, scorecards, designed to help move towards sustainability in measuring the entire life cycle visual footprint of the technologies being analyzed.

• Applied research in the field of social change: This stage addresses the call to the academic community to bring innovative approaches and knowledge from the humanities to energy transition research. In particular, this concerns the study of societal needs in addition to technological or economic ones, realities such as the concepts of justice, acceptance and democracy in the transformation of energy systems.

The lab will conduct applied research with a holistic assessment and in particular of the skills needed for a sustainable energy future, and will also actively create social partnerships and collaborations to mobilize joint efforts to achieve net zero carbon goals. In addition, the laboratory will aim to provide the necessary knowledge in society about the nature and meaning of the transition to sustainability. The new research structure Net Zero Lab aims to establish itself as a competent, transparent and independent academic partner that is appropriate for shaping public opinion and ultimately expert policy-making process through credible data and analysis.
